A good friend of mine is looking for a solution to use Wordpress to collect profiles etc. Out of the box it isn’t possible but I think that three solutions can do the magic:
- Custom admin themes (to style the users profile screen)
- Plugin to extend your profile
- Custom login
With these three you can build a online panel or membership system so people can register and update their own profile.
Remember, you still have all the goodies like blogs etc. You could use the blog feature to let people post testimonials.

I have decided to post some more articles on Wordpress. I have two products that I have a passion for and that is SharePoint (portal for business) and Wordpress (blog/smal portal).
In many areas like blogging Wordpress is still ahead of SharePoint but there will be a day that SharePoint takes over and our company zevenseas will be involved in that! Enough shameless self promotion.
I came across an interesting post on custom login screens for Wordpress.

Check out the full post here: http://www.binarymoon.co.uk/2007/07/wordpress-tips-and-tricks-custom-login-page/ and download the plugin.
Great stuff!

Lijkt me een lastig baantje.

It has been a while that I visited Justin’s site http://www.edgen.com and now I realize again how his dramatic music style always touches me.
Justin has been busy I see on his blog. This is what he says:
"I Made it. The place where I’ve dreamed about as a kid. (and still dreamnt about). Skywalker Ranch in Marin Co. California. For those who don’t know what this place is, I’ll tell you.
Star Wars.
Yup! I’m recording three of my cues here at the ranch with the San Fran Symphony Orchestra. They are only 1.0-1.5 minutes a piece, but it’s going to be so worth it!"
Wow, that is progress!

It has been a long time ago I posted anything on Skype. Today I just remembered something that happened a long time ago (more than a year). I never talked about it before because Skype kinda forced me not to talk about it. Because I had a kind of partner relationship with Skype I didn’t risk to talk about it.
What happened?
Well, I will tell you. In that time I developed these little small plugins to add functionality to Skype. When Skype added a possibility to add moodmessages by using the API I came up with some ideas to fill this mood message automatically from resources on the Internet (like RSS). I created a demo very fast and I worked very well. However, what followed next was a surprise for me. After making the plugin available a few hours/days/months (don’t remember how long anymore) later I got a call from Skype’s product manager. It seemed many Skype clients started crashing and they suspected my plugin to be the cause. They asked me to stop offering the plugin till the problem was solved because it was a bug in Skype and it created a snowball effect. Why? It seemed the new Skype client could handle the Moodmessage but not some freaky HTML code that I put in the Moodmessage. So what happened if someone used my plugin? Something I thought was very cool, it crashed all new Skype clients of the people in the list of the user that used my plugin. WOW! I had 300 users in my list so it could potentially crash all the users in my list. Not only that, almost 1000 people downloaded the plugin in a few hours so it became kind of viral.
I immediately thought, this will bring in a huge amount of traffic if I can post about. So I asked Skype very nicely if I could publish about it when the bug would be fixed. Skype refused and said they would not like it. I decided not to do it (now I did).
Never talked too much about working with Skype but it wasn’t a very social company. All enthusiastic people that joined the DAC (Developer Advisory Council) really added a lot to the Skype API roadmap but not many got something from it. Sure, we got an invitation to join Skype in Tallinn but we had to pay our own ticket etc. Not complaining because I was excited to be there and I was glad to pay it myself.
This isn’t a post to do any harm to Skype, These are just some remarks about the company and how they handled certain stuff in the past. Probably that all changed nowadays!

Not sure if I would like Microsoft taking over Yahoo. Yahoo has a lot of API’s but also mapping software I like and Microsoft has mapping software too. Which product would survive? I know the answer.
Same question for the messenger. Which interface would survive?
And what about Yahoo Live!
I’m really not sure if the Microsoft strategy always works. Sometimes they just buy a company although they already have a kind of same product.
Sure in this case it makes more sense because Yahoo is huge on the Internet and Microsoft is small. Google is the number one company on the Internet and Microsoft needs a good acquisition to get back into the game. It seems Microsoft never recovered from joining the Internet party very late.
If they don’t buy Yahoo they will probably go for Facebook although i’m not sure what that would add. Would it have the same impact as buying Yahoo? I doubt.
My feeling is that Microsoft wants to transform web companies by buying them. By transforming I mean, dump the non-Microsoft technology and rebuild the brand with Microsoft technology.
Take the latest rumor. Microsoft is considering buying Ustream, my favorite live broadcasting software. And yes you guessed, what are they going to do? Transform the site from using Flash to Silverlight. Aaargh!!! I really like the Flash technology and how good it works for video.
So, I’m not sure if I would like Microhoo!
